Carrabassett Valley Academy: Where Academics, Athletics, and Community Meet

Life at Sugarloaf

CVA is located at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain next to the Carrabassett River in the heart of Maine’s western mountains. In winter, students enjoy Sugarloaf's 1,360 skiable acres and 650 acres of backcountry terrain. Off-season activities include hiking the Appalachian Trail, swimming, mountain biking, and other outdoor adventures.

Boarding Student Experience

Boarding at CVA combines world-class training with college-preparatory academics and full access to teachers, coaches, and facilities. Students live in single or double rooms, share meals with peers and staff, and attend evening study halls. With 24/7 support from dorm parents and staff, students develop independence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships.

Day Student Experience

Day students fully participate in the CVA community. They train, study, and take part in activities alongside boarding students. Each athlete has a day room for gear storage and preparation for athletics. After training, students join meals, equipment tuning, dryland sessions, social clubs, study hall, and leadership activities, enjoying the same connection and growth as boarding students.

Faculty Mentorship and Leadership Development

CVA students are guided by exceptional faculty and staff committed to academic, athletic, and personal growth. Small class sizes and individualized attention help students challenge themselves and reach their full potential. Leadership is fostered through team responsibilities, student-led initiatives, and mentoring opportunities, helping athletes build confidence, resilience, and skills that serve them on and off the mountain.

A Community of Big Dogs

Every student, known as a “Big Dog,” contributes to a culture that values character, grit, teamwork, and a love of skiing and snowboarding. CVA is more than a school or an academy. It is a community that prepares student-athletes for success in the classroom, on the mountain, and in life.
