Behind the Start Gate: Volunteers of Sugarloaf Competition
As the winter competition season winds down, it offers an opportunity to thank the many volunteers who help make these events possible. Throughout the winter, athletes from CVA, the Weekend Program, and visiting programs from all over have competed in alpine, snowboard, ski cross, and freestyle events across the mountain.
While the focus is often on the athletes in the start gate, every successful competition depends on a dedicated team working behind the scenes. From course preparation and maintenance to timing, registration, judging, and finish area support, competition days rely on dozens of volunteers. Their work begins long before the first racer leaves the start and often continues well after the final competitor crosses the finish line. These contributions ensure that events run safely and efficiently while providing athletes with the high-quality competitive environment needed for development and progression.
Volunteers play a role across every discipline hosted at Sugarloaf. Alpine races require course crews, gate judges, and timing teams, while snowboard, ski cross, and freestyle competitions rely on volunteers to help maintain venues, assist with athlete flow, and support event operations. Each role—large or small—contributes to the overall success of the competition experience.
The Carrabassett Valley region has long benefited from a strong tradition of volunteerism in winter sports. The collaborative efforts of Sugarloaf Ski Club, Sugarloaf Resort, and the broader CVA community help make Sugarloaf one of the premier competition venues in the East. Together, these partners host events that range from local youth competitions to high-level regional and national races.
For many volunteers, involvement begins through family connections or a general interest in the sport. Over time, many return season after season, drawn by the camaraderie of the competition community and the opportunity to contribute to the development of young athletes.
As this season comes to a close, organizers are already looking ahead to next winter. Additional volunteers are always needed to support the wide range of competitions held throughout the season.
