We share the following reflection with heavy hearts as we remember Clermont “Clem” Begin, who passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025. Clem was a cornerstone of the Carrabassett Valley community and a devoted supporter of CVA. In the reflection, former Head of School John Ritzo honors Clem as a builder, mentor, and friend whose legacy will endure.
Begin's Way - Reflections by John Ritzo
When you arrive on the Carrabassett Valley Academy campus, you turn onto Begin’s Way. The road is named in honor of Clem Begin—a fitting tribute to a man who truly had a “way” of living his life. Clem set an example for others through his actions, his generosity, and his unwavering commitment to community.
Clem’s accomplishments and kindness are legendary. He left a lasting legacy in Carrabassett Valley and the surrounding region as a pioneer who played a significant role in the development of the town, Sugarloaf Mountain, and CVA. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
A Builder, Mentor, and Friend
Clem built far more than structures—he built community and lifelong friendships. He was one of my greatest mentors, teaching me countless lessons along the way. Some were practical, such as how to build a septic system, a dormitory, or a large athletic complex like the Anti-Gravity Center. Others were deeper and more enduring: the importance of giving back, sharing expertise, and contributing to the greater good. Clem was always available for a quick conversation and offered steady, unwavering support.
A Generous Man
Through Clem’s tireless efforts, CVA saved more than $1,000,000 during the construction of the new dormitory. He donated his time, contributed materials, and consistently found the best possible solutions. In one memorable example, Clem drove to Canada to purchase marble countertops for the dormitory kitchens and bathrooms, arranged to have them transported, and personally installed them in all the units. His generosity, energy, and dedication were truly unmatched.
Living a Meaningful Life
Clem taught me what it means to live with purpose. He led by example, working side by side with his crew and never hesitating to roll up his sleeves. He believed that nothing was impossible and that hard work was the foundation of everything worthwhile. His drive and optimism were limitless.
Keeping It Light
Clem also had a great sense of humor and a kind heart. While he could get frustrated when things went wrong—as anyone might—he never held onto anger. In all the years I knew him, he never spoke unkindly about anyone, though his language could be colorful at times. He simply didn’t waste time on negativity or trivial matters; there was always another project waiting.
Leaving a Legacy
Nearly everyone in Carrabassett Valley has a story about Clem—some grounded in fact, others almost unbelievable. All of them, however, are unmistakably “classic Clem.” It would be impossible to list everything he built, every person he helped, or every organization he supported. Clem was an absolute joy to know, and he brought laughter and inspiration to all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
As December settles in and winter fully arrives in Carrabassett Valley, I want to take a moment to wish our entire CVA community a joyful holiday season and a healthy, happy New Year.
