CVA’s Campus Master Plan

Will Savage & Pete Smith
Carrabassett Valley Academy has always been about more than a place to go to school. It is a community built around a shared love of learning, athletics, personal growth, and the mountains that make our setting so unique. The relationships formed here, the challenges our student-athletes embrace, and the traditions we carry forward are at the heart of what makes CVA special.
The Campus Master Planning Committee is excited to share an update on the work underway, the process guiding our decisions, and the vision we are developing for CVA’s future. The planning process is also a key next step in implementing our 2025 Strategic Plan.

Our goal is straightforward but important: to create a campus that better serves the needs of today’s students while thoughtfully preparing CVA for generations of student-athletes to come. Achieving that goal requires careful planning, meaningful collaboration, and a clear understanding of how our campus can best support the school’s mission and reflect our shared values.

We began by assembling a Campus Master Planning Committee with deep experience in engineering, architecture, and commercial real estate. Together, the committee understands the opportunities and constraints of the campus and seeks to develop a practical, long-term plan that reflects CVA’s needs and aspirations.

A successful campus master plan must be informed by the people who live and work here every day. To that end, the committee conducted community surveys and spent considerable time speaking with CVA faculty and staff to better understand the challenges of the existing campus, the needs of our programs, and the priorities that should shape the next phase of development. These conversations have helped us identify areas where improvements can make a meaningful difference in the daily experience of our students and the people who support them.

With this data in hand, the committee submitted a Request For Proposals (RFP) to architectural firms and eventually partnered with Figure 19, a company based in Portland, Maine.

Since being selected, the Figure 19 team has spent numerous hours on campus, getting to know the school, observing how our facilities are used, and listening carefully to the people who make CVA what it is.

A particularly valuable part of the process was an on-campus design charrette, which brought together students, faculty, and parents to share ideas, discuss needs, and imagine possibilities for the future campus.

Our students were fantastic. They brought tremendous energy, thoughtful perspectives, and some wonderfully creative ideas to the discussion. Their willingness to think beyond the obvious reminded us why it is so important to include student voices in this process. After all, they are the ones who will experience these spaces every day, and their insights are essential to creating a campus that truly supports their academic, athletic, and personal development. The input from faculty, staff, and parents has been equally important and helps guide how we look at the functionality of the campus, how spaces connect with one another, and how thoughtful design can address existing problem areas while creating new opportunities for our community.

Translating the data and feedback, Figure 19 is presently developing preliminary campus layouts and building renderings for the committee to review. With a clear vision that best meets the needs of CVA, the committee will then present the plan to the Board of Trustees for approval.

CVA’s greatest strength has always been its people. Our campus is the backdrop for the friendships, achievements, and experiences that shape our students long after graduation. Together, we have an opportunity to create an environment that supports those experiences for many years to come. The committee looks forward to sharing more as the architectural concepts develop and the planning process advances.
