Fall Family Weekend Brings the CVA Community Together

There’s something special about Fall Family Weekend at CVA. Held alongside Sugarloaf’s Homecoming Weekend, it brought CVA families, alumni, staff, and community members together across campus and the mountain. With fall colors throughout the valley and a full weekend of activities, there were plenty of opportunities to catch up and enjoy time together.
Friday evening’s Harvest Dinner kicked things off, with our food service team preparing a meal for families gathered on campus. Many CVA families travel long distances to be here, making the chance to sit down together especially meaningful.

As fall term approaches its end, parent-teacher conferences give families and faculty a chance to discuss students’ progress and identify ways to support their continued growth through the winter term.

Throughout Homecoming Weekend, CVA students took part in events around the mountain and supported causes they care about. National Honor Society students sold baked goods in the Anti-Gravity Center parking lot to benefit Protect Our Winters, the climate organization founded by CVA alumnus Jeremy Jones ’05. The CVA Environmental Club also hosted an interactive educational booth at the Base Lodge, using a game to teach visitors what can and cannot be recycled at Sugarloaf.

CVA partnered with The Rack and Sugarloaf to host the Ski Swap and Sale, giving the community a chance to buy and sell gear ahead of the winter season. CVA also sponsored a downhill mountain bike ride and coaching session led by World Cup athlete and CVA Coach Mazie Hayden. Riders took on Sugarloaf’s trail network, sharpened their skills, and learned from one of the sport’s top competitors.

CVA parents also played an important role in the weekend. In Sugarloaf’s Narrow Gauge Room, Parent Support Organization (PSO) volunteers shared information about CVA while promoting the annual Wreath Sale and CVA Fund raffle. Proceeds from both fundraisers support CVA student-athletes and the opportunities available to them. Thank you to everyone who purchased raffle tickets, and congratulations to CVA grandparent Debra Martin, who took home the grand prize swag basket.

Homecoming also offered prospective families and other visitors a chance to experience CVA firsthand. Through our Experience CVA events, 45 athletes tested their agility on the plyometric obstacle course and got some air on the trampolines with our Action Sports coaches. Twenty families joined the Alpine Coaching team for a ski tuning and tech demonstration, while 30 people toured campus. The events wrapped up with a freestyle freeski film that built excitement for winter.

Weekend Program families were also out and about, with many attending the Equipment Fit Session in the Gondola Room. Hosted by Downhill Supply, the session welcomed representatives from Atomic, Rossignol, and Nordica to answer questions and help families with equipment sizing and fit as they prepare for the season ahead.

The PSO’s annual gathering at Bigelow Station brought the weekend to a close. Many thanks to Phoebe Folger for once again hosting the CVA community at her home.

Fall Family Weekend offered a chance to reconnect with friends, spend time around Sugarloaf, and share a little of CVA life with the wider community. With fall term wrapping up, attention now turns to winter, when many of these familiar faces will be back together on the mountain.
