Nurturing Excellence: Advisory at CVA
At Carrabassett Valley Academy, we know what it means to help young athletes and scholars thrive both in the classroom and on snow. This fall, we are excited to reintroduce the advisory program to serve as a support system for student life and success at CVA.
Designed to build community and strengthen relationships, the advisory program makes sure that students are truly known, celebrated, and supported throughout their journey at CVA. Advisory groups are small groups of 4-6 students from different grades and academic disciplines, creating more opportunities for students to find community at CVA.
Our teachers and coaches work together as advisors to advocate for students and build trust so students can feel comfortable asking for guidance, encouragement, or simply someone to talk to. Equally important, advisors serve as the primary contact for families, creating stronger bonds between home and school so parents feel connected and informed of their child’s progress and well-being. CVA staff and faculty have collaborated to create a multifaceted support system for each student-athlete.

This fall, our advisories kicked things off by checking in after the first week, going over tips for academic success, and reflecting on the “All Me” Assembly. Small advisory groups met on September 8th to debrief the assembly’s core messages about athletic performance, physical, and mental health. Students were able to reflect on what stuck with them and translate this to everyday habits. This week, we got feedback from students about the exciting changes that are outlined in the campus master planning workshop. Advisory time gave students a chance to elevate their voices in the vision for CVA's future.
Students who have experienced advisory at CVA before noted that advisory was dedicated time to relax and decompress. As one advisory made clear, “There are no expectations other than being present.” By having advisory at CVA, we can help reinforce a safe and empowering environment for student-athletes to grow into confident, thoughtful, and balanced individuals, both on and off the mountain.

Starting the Year Together: CVA Orientation Trips
