Geometry Comes to Life Through Community Quilt Project
Kathy Doyon
The Geometry Quilt Project has come full circle, with individual student designs now stitched together to create one finished community quilt. Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, Geometry students designed and created their own quilt squares, each bringing their learning and creativity to the larger project.
Students were challenged to apply geometric concepts they had learned in class to design their own quilt squares. The project began on graph paper, where students created their designs using geometric shapes, measurements, symmetry, angles, and other concepts from the course. Once their designs were complete, students had to take their work from paper to fabric, carefully transferring their designs to scale.
The project gave students an opportunity to see how geometry can be used in a real-world setting. Accuracy mattered. Measurements, proportions, and spatial relationships that students had practiced in class suddenly had a purpose as they worked to make the pieces of their designs fit together correctly.
The project was made even more meaningful through the involvement of two community volunteers, Gayle White and Beth Milewski, who joined us in the classroom and generously shared their time, knowledge, and quilting expertise with our students. They helped students understand the process of turning a mathematical design into a fabric quilt square and provided guidance as students worked through the challenges of creating their pieces.
Each student created an individual square, but those squares ultimately became part of something larger. The finished quilt brought together the work of both Geometry classes and served as a visual representation of the mathematics, creativity, collaboration, and community involvement that went into the project.
A special thank you to Gayle and Beth for sharing their expertise and helping our students see that geometry extends far beyond the classroom.
