Freestyle Weekend Program News March 17/18, 2018

Hello Freestyle Families!

What an awesome weekend of skiing we had last week! Looks like the fantastic conditions will continue this weekend! Glad that Mother Nature finally woke-up to the fact that it is winter in Maine!

The Eastern Championships will take place at Sunday River this weekend. Coaches Tony Dowling, Nate McKenzie, Megan Detels and I will be there to coach the Young Guns and the Jr. Championship Competitors.

I will arrive at Sunday River Thursday a.m. to meet Jr. Athletes at 10 a.m. in the South Ridge Base lodge for training. Junior athletes will warm-up by the Chondola at 10:15 a.m. to train slopestyle from 10:30 a.m. to noon and moguls from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Training prior to the Eastern Championship competition is just to familiarize ourselves with the courses. It’s important not to beat our bodies up the day before the championship competitions begin!

On Friday, the young guns will be competing in aerials and the juniors will be competing in slopestyle. All athletes competing should plan to meet coaches at 8:45 a.m. by the Chondola for warm-up. Tony will coach during the Friday aerial competition for the young guns and Joan/Nate will coach the junior slopestyle event. Mogul training will take place on Friday between 10:30 and 12:30 with either Joan/or Nate facilitating practice.

Saturday the young guns will compete in slopestyle, while the juniors will compete in moguls. Plan to meet coaches for warm-up at 8:30 a.m. by the Chondola. Megan Detels will coach young guns while Tony, Joan and Nate will coach the junior’s mogul competition.

Sunday the young guns will compete in moguls while the juniors compete in aerials. Plan to meet coaches for warm-up at 8:30 a.m. by the Chondola. Megan Detels and Joan Dolan will coach moguls and Tony Dowling will coach aerials.

Trampoline club is cancelled for the weekend and will resume next Saturday, March 24th.

On March 24th, we will be holding a CVA Freestyle Program athlete recognition event in the Gondola Room at the competition center beginning at 1:00 p.m. Cookies and lemonade will be served and coaches will say a few words about each athlete followed by a 1:1 review of individual athlete progress with each athletes coach and parent(s). The event in the Gondola Room is replacing the traditional season-end cookout. Hoping that the weather cooperates for us to hold freestyle only bring your own lunch to the top of Sugarloaf for a picnic on either March 31 or April 1st, the last day of the CVA weekend program. More information on both events will be included in next weeks newsletter.

Good Luck to everyone competing this weekend! Go Dogs Go!

Saturday, Feb 17 – Annual CVA Door-to-Door Canned Food Drive
CVA and United States Ski and Snowboard believe the strongest ski and snowboard clubs are ones that are positioned to be community development partners rather than just sports organizations. CVA gets involved with community initiatives, collaborates with a number of community partners, and performs service work in our community. We believe community involvement helps to make our school and our club be more relevant and known in the community, increases our base of support, and, most importantly, provides opportunities for our young participants and students to develop a deep sense of gratitude and empathy.

Again this year we are inviting our Weekend Program families to be a part of one of CVA’s longest-standing community service traditions – the annual Canned Food Drive. CVA partners with Sugarloaf Area Christian Ministry to go door-to-door to collect donated food to stock the shelves of the local food pantries. We hope you will consider joining us as we help our neighbors-in-need this winter.

Parents, if you and your children would like to volunteer, please pile your children, and as many of their friends as you would like, in your car and arrive at CVA’s dining room at 3:30 pm Saturday, February 17th. The dining room is located in the Capricorn building on Route 27 (not on the King Cummings Campus off the Access Road). You will be given directions to a certain neighborhood and instructions on how to ask for donations. Routes generally take 60-90 minutes. Once completed, or your time runs out, please return to the dining hall, and bring your boxes of food inside to be sorted.

Please RSVP to Pam Morse at pam@sugarloafministry.com.
If you have any questions about volunteering for the Canned Food Drive please email Pam Morse at pam@sugarloafministry.com

All families welcome – join us to Discover CVA!
At the Carrabassett Valley Academy, King Cummings Campus  Wednesday, February 21st 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Bring your young athlete to meet with current students and experience what a day at a Ski and Snowboard Academy is like.

Details: Guests will experience live classrooms and engage with faculty, staff and students. This is a great opportunity to have all of your questions answered by the people who live, learn and train at CVA.

Guests will receive a 10% off voucher for D’Ellies @ Sugarloaf!

Registration opens at 7:15 a.m. and competitors should plan to meet me at by the Competition Center at the bottom of Skidway at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday to warm-up and head up to the Skidder course as a team.

Other items encouraged: capes, bells, horns, etc. Prizes to be awarded for best flags or cape. Hope to see you there!

Last weekend’s competition at Sunapee was amazing! Our 11 athletes who competed in Saturday’s grueling steep, deep and icy mogul competition overwhelmed the field, taking home 14 of the age group and overall medals out of 30 possible awards. Overall mogul awards went to Dory in 1st and Alex 3rd for the girls with Jack placing 3rd in the overall in the boys competition. During Sunday’s slopestyle event we had 5 athletes competing with Kennedy, Reggie and Isabella bringing home age group awards. So very AWESOME, Way to go team! Freestyle Weekend Program News - January 30, 2018

Wow! What a successful weekend of competition we had at Sunday River last week! The mogul course on 3D was steep and extremely icy, but our athletes were more than up to the challenge. CVA was represented on every age group and overall mogul podium showing off their superior technical mogul skills. The CVA men’s mogul team swept the overall mogul podium with Lance Dolan grabbing his first overall mogul victory followed closely by teammates Jack Egan in 2nd, Myles McKenzie in 3rd and Noah Koenig in 7th. Not to be outdone by the boys, Dory Michaud grabbed her first overall mogul victory followed closely by Alexandra Dowling in 3rd and Sophia Dowling close on their heels in 5th.

The start of Sunday’s slopestyle was delayed a couple of hours because of icy conditions which made judging the speed into jumps challenging and the landings firm. CVA athletes skied well with Dory Michaud placing 2nd overall for the women and Jack Egan grabbing 4th. In the combined event, Dory and Jack, both U13’s stood on top of the overall podium again, beating out everyone in the competition including the U15’s.

Special congratulations to CVA Weekend First time competitors on your age group results! Reggie Hicks M9 (1st S), Davis Gall M13 (14th M), Scottie Larsen F13 (11th S, 15th M), Eliza Grimnes F13 (12th S, 13th M), Celia Rose F9 (1st S, 1st M) and Isabella Dowling F9 (2nd S, 2nd M).

To view all last weekend’s results, please click on the following: http://www.easternfreestyle.org/schedule , scroll down to the Sunday River event and click on either the M for mogul results or the S for slopestyle results.

Photographer and Dory’s Dad Jack Michaud took a bunch of fabulous pictures of the competition last weekend. Check them out! http://www.jmphotocraft.com/Sports/Skiing-and-Snowboarding

The CVA Freestyle Team will head to Sunapee Mountain in NH this coming weekend to compete in the mogul and slopestyle events. Joan and Tony will be coaching at the competition. Registration opens at 7:15 a.m. in the upstairs of the base lodge. Please plan to meet coaches and teammates in front of the lodge to warm-up as a team at 8:00 a.m.

The parks at Sugarloaf are in good shape and the groomers are planning to put in 2 new mogul courses this week: a new “B” course on lower Competition Hill and the “A” course on Skidder. Weekend coaches will be at Sugarloaf to coach those athletes not competing at Sunapee. Conor Doughty will be driving the CVA bus and running tramp club this weekend.

Freestyle Weekend Program News – January 11th, 2018

Hello Freestyle Families!

Despite the cold temps last weekend, we had productive training sessions; reviewing video and working out at the AGC on Saturday and enjoying the fresh snow with multiple hot chocolate breaks on Sunday!

Thankfully Mother Nature has decided to increase the temperature outside for the upcoming weekend, though perhaps a little too much!

The US Ski and Snowboard Sanctioned Preston Cup at Waterville Valley, NH is scheduled to take place this Saturday (moguls) and Sunday (double air). The weather on Saturday is predicted to be wet and perhaps icy, so please plan accordingly by bringing extra gloves, goggles, raincoats, umbrellas, and/or trash bags to stay semi-dry. Plan to be at registration by 7:30 a.m. and to meet the team in the base lodge at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday for the mogul event. We will warm-up as a team at 7:55 a.m. and then head up together at 8:00 a.m. to the course for inspection.

For those not competing at Waterville Valley this weekend, coaches will be at Sugarloaf for training on Saturday, Sunday and Monday! The Junior Freestyle League originally scheduled for this Sunday has been postponed due to the change in the Waterville Valley event dates.

Hope to see you on the hill sometime during this Martin Luther King weekend!

Freestyle Weekend Program Newsletter - December 13, 2017

Greetings,

The 8”-10” of new snow received at Sugarloaf yesterday will make the skiing even better this weekend!  Skidder was groomed on Monday and Nate and his CVA athletes have built a new and reportedly awesome jump on the Tote Road Crosscut on the left side of Skidder for us to use this weekend.  In addition to the new jump, plans are in the making to build a machine-made mogul course for the weekend….stay tuned to the CVA TeamApp for updates as the weekend approaches.

Based on personal observation and feedback from the coaching staff, I have made minor adjustments to the groups for the upcoming weekend. The park coach originally hired to work with the program decided not to continue which has caused a bit of a staffing challenge. Nate McKenzie, the CVA Freestyle Program Director, is working diligently to hire a new coach. To view the groups for the upcoming weekend please click on the following link

https://docs.google.com/a/gocva.com/document/d/1Mqq5JWYMHbZA8nGVdjt53RVCMlk4VhSOLFR_ljSW9qw/edit?usp=sharing

The groups are a work in progress, and will continue to evolve through the first of the year.

If you ordered Rutt Mogul Pants, the order has arrived! Please connect with me via text message to arrange a pick-up time (207) 215-8741 this weekend.

If you haven’t signed up for the Trampoline Club yet and wish to do so, please follow the link below to register. Here are the details.
Improve your performance and confidence on the snow by joining our Trampoline Club. The Trampoline Club is offered exclusively to Weekend Program athletes. Our coaches will teach you upright and inverted tricks at our trampoline facility at the Anti-Gravity Complex complete with harness and spotting apparatus.

The pickup spot is in the 60 minute parking lot below D'Ellies Restaurant. CVA van will depart at 2:05pm for the Anti Gravity Center. Parents pick up their athletes at the AGC from 3:45-4:00 PM.

Dear Freestyle Weekend Program Families,

The 2017-18 CVA Weekend Program is nearly here! By-and-large, our communication processes will run the same as last year. We will continue to post Newsletters to the website, as well as send them through Team App. This helps to reduce e-clutter, a frequent culprit of missed information in years past. Newsletters can be found on our site: https://www.gocva.com/freestyleweekendprogramnews. We encourage you to bookmark this page, updated news will be posted on Wednesday afternoons. Please plan to check-in each week throughout the season.

In order to provide our coaching staff with a quick way to more directly send time sensitive information to parents (e.g. Jr. Bump League competition has been moved to Winter’s Way today at 9:00 a.m.), and as a forum for parents to chat and organize with one another, we will continue use of the CVA community on FREE downloadable app: Team App*. *Team App can be downloaded for free to your handheld device, or you may enroll via your desktop. In order to receive messages, you will need to set up an account and join the Carrabassett Valley Academy group and choose the freestyle group.

Our Marketing and Communications Director, Sarah Perry, will be available at the Comp Center on opening weekend to provide training and support for newcomers to the App, or those experiencing any other technical difficulties. She will have three girls in the program this year, so will also be around and available throughout the season as well.

If you are interested in ordering a weekend program jacket please click on the link : https://gocva.configio.com/search?cid=417

One final note, many of you will have noticed a change in online registration. We are now utilizing a much more robust software interface for all auxiliary programs at CVA. Please do not use links from last year to access registration forms. Please contact CVA Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs, Venise Fournier with any questions throughout the season: vfournier@goCVA.com or at 207-237-4459.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Saturday, Feb 18 Canned Food Drive

CVA and USSA believe the strongest ski and snowboard clubs are ones that are positioned to be community development partners rather than just sports organizations.

Parents, if you and your children would like to volunteer, please pile your children, and as many of their friends as you would like, in your car and arrive at CVA’s dining room around 3:30 pm Saturday, February 18th. If you have any questions about volunteering for the Canned Food Drive please email jlynes@gocva.com.

December 7, 2016

Dear Freestyle Weekend Program Families:

Wow! What a fantastic first weekend on snow for the CVA weekend Program last weekend!  We spent time getting to know each other while riding rails, skiing bumps and taking jumps!  Check out the sweet opening weekend video of opening weekend on CVA’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/104136239657089/videos/1286197231450978/

Looking forward to another fun packed weekend with a bit more open terrain to explore.  Groups this week will continue to focus on stance, balance and putting some miles on our skis. We will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the bottom of the Double Runner chairlift for a team warm-up and then head out to ski from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. and noon to 2:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

This Saturday, December 10th the Comp Center’s Gondola Room will be closed at Noon in order to set up for the 2:30 p.m. dedication. All personal items must be removed from  the room by Noon. You are welcome to store your items in the wax room. Please join us at 2:30 p.m.for the dedication of the Joan and Bill Alfond Competition Center.

Please remind your athletes to use the ski racks found outside the Competition Center, at the weekend meeting spot and in front of the Base Lodge rather than leaving them on the snow.  Using the racks keeps skis and poles out of the way of other skiers and from being run over by snowmobiles and snow cats.

Trampoline Club begins December 17th; and is filling up fast! Don't miss out on signing your athletes up for the club to help them take their freestyle jumping skills to the next level.  Click here for more information and to sign up: https://www.gocva.com/Athletics/freestyle/weekendprogram/trampolineclub.

Dear Freestyle Weekend Program Families:

The first day of CVA’s 2016-17 Weekend Program, is this Saturday, December 3rd! We will meet all freestyle athletes inside the Bill and Joan Alfond Competition Center beginning at 8:00 a.m. and head out for skiing with coaches in groups from 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. and again from noon - 2:00 p.m.  A freestyle parent meeting will be held in the Competition Center on December 3rd, beginning at 2:30 p.m. During the meeting  coaches will be introduced, an overview of the freestyle program will be provided, and parent questions answered.

The RUTT mogul pants are here and will be available for pick-up at the Competition Center on Saturday morning or at the 2:30 parent meeting.  If you are intending to keep the pants for a holiday gift, please send me an email.  If the pants are a gift, I will keep them in a separate spot, so as not to spoil the surprise!

Please be advised that parking is not permitted in the lot and road closest to the Competition Center - Gondi Village lot and Adams Mountain Road. Pick up and drop off in the Gondi Village lot is also strongly discouraged. Instead, please park in day parking lots below the Sugarloaf Hotel or in 60 minute parking. CVA, the Sugarloaf Ski Club and USSA stress how important it is for clubs to do all they can to maintain positive interactions with resort customers. Parking and driving legally is one way Weekend Program parents can show respect for the resort and their hometown club. Thank you!

Looking forward to seeing you this Saturday! THINK SNOW !!

October 24, 2016

Dear Freestyle Weekend Program Families:

Registration is still open for the Freestyle Weekend Program.  If you haven't registered  your athlete(s) for this season, this is a good time to do so, as our opening day (December 3rd) is only 6 short Saturday’s away.  If you have family or friends with children that may be interested in joining our weekend program, please encourage them to register and to get in touch with me if they have any questions.  We always welcome new families into the program and it’s fun to see new faces out on the slopes.

L.L. Bean CVA Jackets are ready for you to order: http://www.gocva.com/llbeanjackets. We encourage you to order this week for the best selection. This winter, we will be ordering team mogul pants from Rutt Mogul Pants. Check out the Rutt Mogul Pants website www.RuttMogulPants.com for detailed sizing information. Our team color will be white to blend in with the snow better, making it less likely that the judges will notice minor technique flaws during competition.  The pant sizes begin with children’s size 7-8, and sizing goes all the way up to adult large pants. They regularly cost $160 per pair along with a $40 per pair shipping charge.  By placing a team order, the shipping fee will be waived.  I plan to place the team order the week of November 14th. Email me by November 7th at jdolan@goCVA.com to let me know you plan to order mogul pants. Once I receive an email from you, I will reply with an order form and payment information.

We will have an after-skiing parent/team meeting at 2:30 p.m. on December 3rd at a location to be determined. We will discuss competition schedules and other program logistics.  This meeting will be followed up with a Holiday Vacation week meeting at a date/location also to be determined.

If your child needs new ski equipment, please plan to visit Jerrod Dicentes at The Downhill Supply Company on a Saturday before the program begins.  Jerrod has years of experience and knows exactly what skis, boots and bindings will work best for freestyle athletes.  Boots that fit and flex properly are critical for young athletes; please don’t make the common mistake of buying boots that are too big, as they make it very difficult to turn quickly. Generally speaking, entry level freestyle program athletes should be skiing on weight and ability appropriate twin tip skis.   If your athlete can ski comfortably and aggressively on all terrain, their skis should fall somewhere between their nose and forehead.  If your athlete falls into the advanced-intermediate or beginning-expert categories, or is quite light in weight for their age, the recommended ski length would be between chin and nose. If you can’t make it to the mountain before ski season, we will be holding a “fit night” in early December at Downhill Supply Company at a date to be determined.

The majority of CVA freestyle weekend program athletes will be competing in USSA competitions this winter.  The USSA schedule has yet to be finalized, but should be posted soon at www.EasternFreestyle.org  which has a wealth of information on competing in our sport.

Trampoline Club:

Improve your performance and confidence on the snow by joining our Trampoline Club.  The Trampoline Club is offered exclusively to WP athletes. Our coaches will teach you upright and inverted tricks at our trampoline facility at the Anti-Gravity Complex complete with harness and spotting apparatus.

Trampoline Club is for athletes ages 8-19. We will meet on select Saturdays at 2pm-4pm from December to March. CVA will provide Transportation from Sugarloaf Mtn. The pick-up spot is at the stairs below Delle's Restaurant.  A CVA van will depart at 2pm for the Anti-Gravity Center.
