Saturday, Feb 18 Canned Food Drive

CVA and USSA believe the strongest ski and snowboard clubs are ones that are positioned to be community development partners rather than just sports organizations. CVA gets involved with community initiatives, collaborates with a number of community partners, and performs service work in our community. We believe community involvement helps to make our school and our club be more relevant and known in the community, increases our base of support, and, most importantly, provides opportunities for our young participants and students to develop a deep sense of gratitude and empathy.

Again this year we are inviting our Weekend Program families to be a part of one of CVA’s longest-standing community service traditions – the annual Canned Food Drive. CVA partners with Sugarloaf Area Christian Ministry to go door-to-door to collect donated food to stock the shelves of the local food pantries. We hope you will consider joining us as we help our neighbors-in-need this winter.

Parents, if you and your children would like to volunteer, please pile your children, and as many of their friends as you would like, in your car and arrive at CVA’s dining room around 3:30 pm Saturday, February 18th. The dining room is located in the Capricorn building on Route 27 (not on the King Cummings Campus off the Access Road). You will be given directions to a certain neighborhood and instructions on how to ask for donations. Routes generally take 60-90 minutes. Once completed, or your time runs out, please return to the dining hall, and bring your boxes of food inside to be sorted. If you have any questions about volunteering for the Canned Food Drive please email jlynes@gocva.com.

Dear Freestyle Weekend Program Families:

Registration is still open for the Freestyle Weekend Program.  If you haven't registered  your athlete(s) for this season, this is a good time to do so, as our opening day (December 3rd) is only 6 short Saturday’s away.  If you have family or friends with children that may be interested in joining our weekend program, please encourage them to register and to get in touch with me if they have any questions.  We always welcome new families into the program and it’s fun to see new faces out on the slopes.

L.L. Bean CVA Jackets are ready for you to order: http://www.gocva.com/llbeanjackets. We encourage you to order this week for the best selection. This winter, we will be ordering team mogul pants from Rutt Mogul Pants. Check out the Rutt Mogul Pants website www.RuttMogulPants.com for detailed sizing information. Our team color will be white to blend in with the snow better, making it less likely that the judges will notice minor technique flaws during competition.  The pant sizes begin with children’s size 7-8, and sizing goes all the way up to adult large pants. They regularly cost $160 per pair along with a $40 per pair shipping charge.  By placing a team order, the shipping fee will be waived.  I plan to place the team order the week of November 14th. Email me by November 7th at jdolan@goCVA.com to let me know you plan to order mogul pants. Once I receive an email from you, I will reply with an order form and payment information.

We will have an after-skiing parent/team meeting at 2:30 p.m. on December 3rd at a location to be determined. We will discuss competition schedules and other program logistics.  This meeting will be followed up with a Holiday Vacation week meeting at a date/location also to be determined.

If your child needs new ski equipment, please plan to visit Jerrod Dicentes at The Downhill Supply Company on a Saturday before the program begins.  Jerrod has years of experience and knows exactly what skis, boots and bindings will work best for freestyle athletes.  Boots that fit and flex properly are critical for young athletes; please don’t make the common mistake of buying boots that are too big, as they make it very difficult to turn quickly. Generally speaking, entry level freestyle program athletes should be skiing on weight and ability appropriate twin tip skis.   If your athlete can ski comfortably and aggressively on all terrain, their skis should fall somewhere between their nose and forehead.  If your athlete falls into the advanced-intermediate or beginning-expert categories, or is quite light in weight for their age, the recommended ski length would be between chin and nose. If you can’t make it to the mountain before ski season, we will be holding a “fit night” in early December at Downhill Supply Company at a date to be determined.

The majority of CVA freestyle weekend program athletes will be competing in USSA competitions this winter.  The USSA schedule has yet to be finalized, but should be posted soon at www.EasternFreestyle.org  which has a wealth of information on competing in our sport.

Trampoline Club:

Improve your performance and confidence on the snow by joining our Trampoline Club.  The Trampoline Club is offered exclusively to WP athletes. Our coaches will teach you upright and inverted tricks at our trampoline facility at the Anti-Gravity Complex complete with harness and spotting apparatus.

Trampoline Club is for athletes ages 8-19. We will meet on select Saturdays at 2pm-4pm from December to March. CVA will provide Transportation from Sugarloaf Mtn. The pick-up spot is at the stairs below Delle's Restaurant.  A CVA van will depart at 2pm for the Anti-Gravity Center.
