Testing and Evaluation

Carrabassett Valley Academy offers a unique and rigorous college preparatory education. Our mission for the academic program includes a broad range of learners. The information below describes the extent and limits of CVA's programs and will help the School and families make an informed decision about the fit between CVA and their child.

Academic Assistance:
The CVA classroom is an environment where students learn to be critical, analytical thinkers, prepared to appropriately challenge ideas and explore complex concepts. The dynamic is such that students are required to be prepared and on task to contribute to the success of each class period.  When a student experiences academic difficulty they are provided with an opportunity to meet with an academic tutor one-on-one outside of class. This enables the student an opportunity to gain additional understanding without changing the dynamic in the classroom. There is an added fee for academic assistance.

Services Unavailable at CVA:
CVA will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified students with disabilities as described in the last paragraph below. However, we do not provide the following:

  • Classroom ed-techs or aides
  • Health services beyond the health care as described in the student handbook
  • Behavioral interventions or behavioral management plans
  • Special Education classes or instruction
  • Services such as speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy(other than for injuries a student may encounter in our athletic program), or social training curriculum
  • Support services and facilities that may be required for physical disabilities

CVA does not provide educational or diagnostic testing. If a child should need these services after becoming a CVA student, families must contact a qualified evaluator.

Release of Records
As a step in the application process, parents must authorize the student's prior school to release all the student's education records and to permit CVA officials to discuss the student's educational history with representatives of the previous school.

In providing a student's educational records, parents must ensure that all diagnostic and educational testing is provided regardless of whether the testing took place at a prior school or was arranged for and conducted by a private practitioner at a site other than school.

Withholding educational records may be grounds for termination of the student's enrollment.

Students with Diagnosed Disabilities
Parents of students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, who have been diagnosed with a disability that qualifies under the American with Disabilities Act, may request CVA to provide accommodations. The decision to permit or deny requested accommodations will be made on a case-by-case basis. Such decisions will take into consideration:

        1.      the nature and extent of the child's diagnosed disability;
        2.      all diagnostic and academic testing and evaluations;
        3.      academic recommendations from a licensed provider;
        4.      information generated through the PET process at the student's local public school;
        5.      the student's educational history, including behavioral history and prior use of accommodations; and
        6.      whether such accommodations can be provided without undue burden to the School and without fundamentally altering the nature of a program, course or course of study or lowering programmatic standards. It is essential that documentation of all testing and evaluations be shared with the School.
