“There is no other school I would ever consider sending my son to in order to have as much care, concern, quality effort made on every level as he receives at CVA. The excellence goes way beyond the successful coaching, grades, or education in classes. There’s a real commitment almost universally to help above and beyond what is expected."

FAQs

Q. Can students bring cars to school?
Boarding students may have a vehicle at CVA, with permission from the Director of Student Services, for the purpose of going home for vacation or weekends, or to drive to college interviews. They must register their vehicle with the Director of Student Services and may not use it while at school, nor drive to off-campus activities. If students want to transport other students for vacation and weekend travel, written permission is required from both sets of parents. Day students are not permitted to leave campus with their vehicles during the school day and will turn their key into the office upon arrival to school each day.

Q. What should students bring for their dorm rooms?
Desk organizer, blankets, sheets (long twin), towels, pillows, rugs, wastebasket, comforter, desk lamp, locking footlocker, UL-approved fused extension cords, and room decorating items as allowed by fire regulations.

Q. Are there laundry facilities?
There are coin-operated laundries in the dormitories. A change-maker is available in the dorm.

Q. When are students' grades sent to parents?
Grades and teacher comments are recorded and sent to parents at the end of each quarter. Mid-term progress reports are issued at the mid-point of each quarter.

Q. How does CVA stay in touch with parents?
Staying in touch is very important as CVA sees the education of your child as a partnership. To keep you up-to-date on campus news, you will receive the Spillway newsletter once a year and the Electronic Spillway via email every month. CVA also holds two parent weekends a year where there are parent/teacher conferences plus social activities. In addition, your student's advisor will contact you on a regular basis.

Q. Can students stay in their rooms during vacations?
The dorms are closed during the fall break, Thanksgiving break, Winter Holiday break, and spring break. Please contact the Director of Student Services if your child cannot go home during one of the breaks and needs help finding a place to stay.

Q. What if students get sick or injured while they are at school?
CVA has a school nurse who conducts sick call for boarding students each school day .The nurse will make the determination if a student needs to see a physician and will make arrangements with the local doctor for an examination. The school notifies parents when their child is ill. We also have an athletic trainer who will attend to injuries and determine if a student needs to be examined by a doctor.

Q. Can students bring their own computers?
Although CVA has a computer lab, most students find it necessary to have the flexibility of access to their own computer, either a desktop in their dorm room or a laptop that can be used in their dorm room and to maintain contact with teachers while on the road. System requirements are listed in the Student Handbook.

Q. What is the difference between the 9, 7, and 5 month terms?
There are many aspects of Carrabassett Valley Academy, which make us unique.  One aspect, which we would like to highlight here, is our annual calendar.  The calendar was designed to fit the mission of our school; We seek “to foster individual student development by providing the optimum balance of excellence” in our three program areas.  Experience has taught us that balance is essential.

The nine-month program was designed with this essential balance in mind.  In all terms at CVA, students have academic as well as athletic commitments, but a student’s focus changes in each term.  In the fall term, students are highly focused on academic work and attend classes on Saturdays to prepare for the winter months. Students attending in the fall semester get in optimum physical shape from a sport specific dryland training program that utilizes our newest athletic facilities, the Anti-Gravity Center, plus our new full-size soccer field and 440 running track. Academically students are able to focus on their studies without having to adjust to the transition between their home school in November.  The close, family-like atmosphere created in the fall encourages lasting relationship between students and faculty. In the winter term, students shift their focus to their athletic competition season.  During the height of the competition season, students are still active participants in their learning while traveling, but use non-traditional ways to communicate with their teachers, who are in the classrooms.  In the spring, the focus shifts again to the academic experience and students attend classes on Saturdays in this term as well.

Students who attend CVA for the full year can rely on the academy’s college counseling services.  We assist families in making appropriate college choices; plan for the PSAT/SAT’s; write the counselor’s recommendation; and assist with completing the applications.  Seniors who are at CVA for five or seven months will need to rely upon their home school guidance counselor for those services and arrive at CVA with their applications completed.

Our five-month program begins in November and ends in April.  This program is specifically for 8th grade students, but CVA accepts applications from 9th-12th grade students who have a B average and have compelling reasons to participate in the shortened program.  For the five-month term, students are considered to be full-time CVA students and they participate in our program, which means they transfer into our academic and athletic curriculum.  While students are here, CVA teachers are responsible for the course content, grades, and exams.  Home schools award credit based on successful completion of course requirements. The five-month program is more challenging than CVA’s nine-month program because it demands more responsibility on the part of the student.  Not only does the student train and attend classes at CVA, but he/she is also responsible for making sure that he/she can return to his/her home school prepared to finish the year.

Our seven-month program allows a student to make only one school transition; either into our curriculum in November or back to the home school’s in April. The student has two choices with the seven-month program: arrive at CVA in September and stay until April, or arrive in November and stay until June. For the seven-month term, students are considered to be full-time CVA students and they participate in our program, which means they transfer into our academic and athletic curriculum.  While students are here, CVA teachers are responsible for the course content, grades, and exams.  Home schools award credit based on successful completion of course requirements for those students who return to their home schools in April.
