This winter has made it tough for local areas to host events as planned.  The silver lining in the semi-snowless clouds is that we will be adding a second slopestyle event to our Sugarloaf competition on January 31st.  Because we will be hosting a second slopestyle event at Sugarloaf, we are no longer planning to travel to Sunapee in NH.  For USSA athletes who need an additional mogul event, we will be staffing the mogul event at Waterville Valley.  Please see the updated Freestyle WP calendar for additional information https://docs.google.com/document/d/14QMt-_l-4XNYMENplx06TaGUwBiY56IRvPlk8vTcdqM/edit

As discussed at our December parent meeting, Janelle Michaud will be organizing a potluck luncheon at the Competition Center for our competitors during the events at Sugarloaf.  Please keep an eye on your email for more details and potluck sign-up information.

Thanks to Sugarloaf’s snowmakers for making our December vacation week on-snow training possible! Despite a lack of natural snow, we had great week of training.  Athletes’ basic skiing skills as well as their jumping, park and mogul skiing skills progressed significantly during the week. It was great to see everyone compete in Sunday’s Junior Bump League competition!  Following is a link to photos taken by Teddy and Dory’s Dad Jack Michaud during the mogul competition http://www.jmphotocraft.com/Sports/Skiing-and-Snowboarding/2016-Sugarloaf/.

Following is a calendar of CVA weekend freestyle program events for the next two weeks and a link to the season long calendar, which is a bit of a moving target due the rescheduling of events:

We are also offering a winter training camp the week of February 22-26. Hope you can join us for a training Friday or the camp. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks to those of you who joined us for the Weekend Program Social on December 27th – what a wonderful way to celebrate our first significant snowfall and the formal announcement about our Competition Center project.  For those of you who have not yet heard, CVA recently received  a $1 million gift from the Bill and Joan Alfond Foundation which will help make this long-awaited new facility a reality and honors the longstanding partnership among the Sugarloaf Ski Club, CVA and Sugarloaf.  The 11,000 sq. ft. Competition Center will be located on the same location as the current facility but will be expanded to include day lodge space, tuning and waxing facilities, locker rooms, a trainer’s room, meeting space and offices. Construction on the new $2 million facility is set to begin in May 2016 and will be complete by November 2016, ensuring that the facility will be fully operational for the U.S. Alpine Championships which return to Sugarloaf in March 2017.   In addition to the lead gift, we need the greater Sugarloaf and Carrabassett Valley community to rally together to financially support this endeavor. There are various ways for you to be involved in this exciting project and to leave your tracks on this moment in Sugarloaf history. We encourage you to learn more  at: www.sugarloaf.com/compcenter or contact a member of the Competition Center Fundraising Committee:

December 9, 2015

During the upcoming weekend Freestyle coaches will continue to focus on developing/refining basic skiing skills; a theme we will emphasize throughout the winter.  Our primary focus last weekend was on turn initiation through steering and pole plants; this weekend we will shift our focus to edging skills.

Tramp club will meet again this weekend and is currently full.  The CVA mini bus, driven by CVA coach, Jesse Duncan, will leave the 60 minute parking area by the stairs below D’Ellie’s at 2:10 p.m.  Pick-up time from tramp club is promptly at 3:50 p.m. Please plan to arrive on time to collect your athlete and their equipment.

HOT off the press! The 2015-16 Weekend Program Handbook for Parents and Athletes. This guide contains information which will help you and your children get the most out of the Weekend Program. If you have any questions about the information in the handbook please contact your program manager. If you have any suggestions on ways to improve it, or other information you would like to see in the handbook, please pass them along to Kate Punderson at kpunderson@gocva.com.

CVA and USSA believe the strongest ski and snowboard clubs are ones that are positioned to be community development partners rather than just sports organizations. CVA gets involved with community initiatives, collaborates with a number of community partners, and performs service work in our community. We believe community involvement helps to make our school and our club be more relevant and known in the community, increases our base of support, and, most importantly, provides opportunities for our young participants and students to develop a deep sense of gratitude and empathy.

This year we are inviting our Weekend Program families to be a part of one of CVA’s longest-standing community service traditions – the annual Canned Food Drive. CVA partners with Sugarloaf Area Christian Ministry to go door-to-door to collect donated food to stock the shelves of the local food pantries. We hope you will consider joining us as we help our neighbors-in-need this year.

Parents, if you and your children would like to volunteer, please pile your children, and as many of their friends as you would like, in your car and arrive at CVA’s dining room around 3:30 pm this Saturday. The dining room is located in the Capricorn building on Route 27 (not on the King Cummings Campus off the Access Road). You will be given directions to a certain neighborhood and instructions on how to ask for donations. Routes generally take 60-90 minutes. Once completed, or your time runs out, please return to the dining hall, and bring your boxes of food inside to be sorted. If you have any questions about volunteering for the Canned Food Drive please email jlynes@gocva.com. Thank you.

Also on Saturday, Sugarloaf is getting in the spirit of the season with the first ever Holiday Tree Lighting and Fireworks. Festivities begin at 4 pm and end with fireworks at 6:15. If you participate in the Canned Food Drive you will still have time to head up to the Village for the tree lighting and fireworks. Dear Freestyle Weekend Program Families:

Registration is still open for the Freestyle Weekend Program.  If you haven't registered  your athlete(s) for this season, this is a good time to do so, as our opening weekend is only 5 short weekends away.  If you have friends or family with children that may be interested in joining our weekend program, please encourage them to register and to get in touch with me if they have any questions.  We always welcome new families into the program and it’s fun to see new faces out on the slopes.

Click here for the CVA team jackets from LL Bean.  It looks and feels awesome both at Sugarloaf and while competing at other ski areas, to have our young athletes be in uniform.  Purchasing a team jacket is encouraged, though not mandatory. Parents, friends, and relatives may purchase a CVA supporter jacket. Click here

The USSA Eastern Freestyle Competition Schedule was posted earlier this week and can be found at the following link

If there is sufficient interest, we will be sending coaches and seasoned USSA mogul/slopestyle athletes to the first competition at Waterville Valley in NH scheduled for December, 19th and 20th.  New and seasoned competitors should plan to compete at Sunday River in moguls on January 9th and slopestyle on January 10th. I will be sending a link to the USASA slopestyle competition schedule as soon as it is available.

We will have an after-skiing parent/team meeting at 2:30 p.m. on December 5th at a location to be determined. We will discuss competition schedules and other program logistics.  This meeting will be followed up with a Holiday Vacation week meeting at a date/location also to be determined.

If your child needs new ski equipment, The Sugarloaf Ski Shop is hosting a “fit night” for CVA Weekend Program Families on December 5th.  Generally speaking, entry level freestyle program athletes should be skiing on weight and ability appropriate twin tip skis.   If your athlete can ski comfortably and aggressively on all terrain, their skis should fall somewhere between their nose and forehead.  If your athlete falls into the advanced-intermediate or beginning-expert categories, or is quite light in weight for their age, the recommended ski length would be between chin and nose.

Dear Weekend Program Families,

I know a few of you are still enjoying one last week of summer, but there’s a chill in the air in the mornings and winter will be here before you know it.

CVA, my family and I are taking advantage of an exciting professional development opportunity for the upcoming winter season. Between October 2015 and April 2016 I will be taking a sabbatical from CVA. My family and I will be living in Telluride, CO where I will be involved with the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club as a program consultant and coach. I will remain CVA’s Freestyle Program Director while in Colorado and the day-to-day operations of the Academy and Weekend Programs will be taken care of by our experienced and capable coaching staff.

I am pleased to let you know that Joan Dolan is now the Freestyle Weekend Program Manager. Joan has played a significant role in developing youth freestyle skiers and during the years she worked for CVA , she managed the Freestyle Program including the Weekend Program. I'm honored to have her manage the program during my time away. Please contact her at 207-215-8741 or joandolan17@gmail.com with any questions.

Thank you for your support of CVA and our Freestyle Program. I am excited to have this career opportunity and look forward to the continued success of our Freestyle Program. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Ski Club News

The Sugarloaf Ski Club is a huge supporter of our ski and snowboard programs and competitions at Sugarloaf.  We rely on them to help staff our events and without them we would not be able to have such a strong competition program.

In addition to all of the work they put in on the hill, they also provide scholarships to our athletes. If this is something that you are interested in applying for, please note the scholarship deadline is September 28th.  Please look at the Sugarloaf Ski Club website for more information.

If you are not yet a member of the Ski Club, I encourage you to join this wonderful organization.  They host various socials and fundraisers during the season that are fun to attend. Please consider volunteering…...the best way to see events is to be a volunteer and see the action from the side of the course!

Registration

Registration is open for the 2015-16 Weekend Program (link below)

Calendar

The Freestyle WP Calendar along with all other gatherings and training opportunities are scheduled. (Link below)

Equipment

Fit Night will be held at the DownHill Supply on December 5th at 4pm.

We are happy to partner with Sugarloaf’s DownHill Supply Company(DHSC) again this season. We will have a fit night which works well for those of you looking for ski boots. Most of the ski gear that we recommend for our Freestyle disciplines will be on display for you to view and order.

Jerrod Dicentes will help you with gear throughout the season; a good reason to buy from DHSC. DHSC is also offering 30% off hard goods and discounts on other products you'll need on the hill. Save the Date: Dec 5th at 4pm.

Our Programing

This season we will offer training groups for Moguls and FreeSkiing and will not offer a group for FreeRide/Big Mountain. Sugarloaf’s season-long junior program offers a non-competitive program for Big Mountain skiing.  It is a great program that I would personally recommend for those looking for a big mountain experience. The coaches are outstanding and will help your child progress in his/her skiing.

As the Ski The East Tour becomes more of a competitive outlet for young athletes, we may have the opportunity to re-establish the competitive FreeRide/Big Mountain groups in the CVA Weekend Program.

Competition Schedule

Look for updates on the Freestyle WP Calendar as the season starts to shape up.

Look for Drop Box League, Junior Bump League and USASA slopestyle and USSA slopestyle/moguls events soon.

Parent Handbooks

Handbooks will be available for Homecoming Weekend.

Sincerely

Nathan Mckenzie

Greetings Weekend Program Families!

It’s been a long, cold January, but with February here things are starting to shape up (like the snow banks!) and before we know it, February break will be upon us. With February break also comes our 2015 Scholarship Event, to be held Saturday the 21st from 6pm – 9pm at the Sugarloaf Inn. As vital members of our community, we hope you will join us that night to help support our student-athletes, 50% of which receive scholarship assistance generated from this event.

The Scholarship Event is our only annual event to raise scholarship money. Through sponsorship, the raffle, and the live and silent auction we are working hard to meet our goal of $95,000. In order to do this, we need your help. Here are some ways you can support these great student-athletes:

·         Buy a raffle ticket – only 500 tickets will be sold! Click HERE to buy you ticket online now.

·         Become an event sponsor – CLICK HERE to send a message to Sarah Hinman if you are interested in possibly becoming an event sponsor; sponsorships start at $250 and are a great way to promote your business.

Hello Freestyle Parents

CVA Freestyle is “ rocking the results.”  Check out the Facebook page for all the exciting finishes and news. Thanks to all the coaches both part-time and full-time for making all these exciting opportunities for our athletes.

As a reminder there are 3 ways to stay up- to- date:

  1. With our Newsletter. We update it weekly with all the upcoming events and important details

  2. With the weekly email. Again, this outlines the details of the events for the upcoming weekend

Hello Freestyle Families:

Thanks to all the athletes, coaches and parents for a great vacation on snow. The freestyle program athletes maintained their focus and accomplished many new skills. I'm especially proud of the youngest group. These little guys and girls are truly passionate about skiing and are enjoying each other and their coach, Nic Messier.  Although their jumping skills have shown the most improvement, it is important that they continue to focus on skiing round turns with visible pole plants.

Our Freeskiing (Park & Pipe) athletes competing in the USASA series will be headed to Saddleback this weekend for a slopestyle event on Saturday. The addition of the stomping grounds park at Sugarloaf has set our athletes up for success.  The next event will be at Shawnee Peak on January 25th. We will have a bus available with limited seats (first come, first served). Jesse Duncan will be the lead coach on the trip and details will follow.

Our mogul athletes have been working hard with two of the best development coaches I’ve seen. Thanks to Joan and Tony these skiers are really progressing well. We have constructed a well-built A level mogul course for this weekend’s Kagan Cup mogul event. This will serve as quality training for the mogul athletes when they return from their first event at Sunday River this weekend.

Come out and support our CVA Mogul athletes at the Kagan Cup this weekend

Skiers to watch:

Jesse Lowell

Noah Fournier

Grace Holstein

Anna Drumstas

The FreeRide (Big Mtn. Competitive) group has been preparing for their first event at Jay Peak next weekend on January 17th.The athletes will depart from CVA on January 16th at 1pm. If you need a ride and lodging please contact Nathan Mckenzie at 207-441-4759. You can register online at SKITHEEAST.com. The next Ski The East event will be on February 7th at Sugarbush. If you are planning to attend and want lodging please contact Nathan Mckenzie soon.

Greetings and Happy Holidays,

As vital members of the CVA community, we wanted to take a moment to talk about the Annual Fund and how you, as Weekend Program Families, can help us meet our goals. The Annual Fund is a critical part of Carrabassett Valley Academy. With it, we are able to give financial support to students who have worked so hard to get here but otherwise would not be able to attend. The ability to offer such support to nearly half of our students helps to keep us competitive but also to maintain a culturally and socio-economically diverse community, which was a key facet of our founding vision.  The Annual Fund also helps to cover the cost of essential pieces to our daily academic, athletic, and community life that tuition alone does not cover.
Just as all our athletes work hard on the hill to achieve their goals, we, too, are working hard to reach our 2015 Annual Fund goal of $180,000 from 390 donors. You can support us in reaching that goal by making a contribution today at www.gocva.com/give. Every gift counts and we greatly appreciate your support.
Please take a few minutes to watch our video which features current students and details what the Annual Fund provided for CVA in 2014. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfH5UZNNprs

December 11th

Hello Freestyle Families:

I’m currently in Summit County, Colorado and am surprised by the lack of early- season snow here. I hear that with the snow storm last night that Sugarloaf's conditions are very good. I want to thank Sugarloaf for their efforts this past week and opening the Haywire Park.  Next will be the mogul courses.

Trampoline club will start this Saturday, the 13th. If your child is part of this program please read the details below:

Leave a bag with clothes, sneakers and water in the base lodge where your child can locate it.

After skiing all the athletes will pick up their bags and a coach will be assigned to walk them from the base lodge over to the stairs below D’Ellies where the CVA van/bus will be waiting.

We will arrive at the AGC and leave our skis/poles outside until parents arrive at 3:45 for pick up. If you find the door to the AGC locked please do not panic. We have to lock the doors so strangers do not enter the build during CVA scheduled time. A coach will check the doors at approximately 3:45 to let parents in.

Please help us keep the lobby of the AGC clean and picked up. The public hours start at 4pm, so it is important that we keep this area clear. By arriving at 3:45 parents can start loading boots, skis and poles into cars.

We have 1 spot available if your child is interested.

December 3rd

HELLO WEEKEND PROGRAM FAMILIES,

How we have grown this season. One week ago we had under 30 athletes registered for the Freestyle Program. The day of registration the athlete count accelerated to 45. This is a good surprise but one that requires more coaches and planning. Next season let’s take advantage of the early bird discount and have everyone sign up in advance. We are looking for 2 more qualified coaches to join our staff. If you have anyone interested in coaching this season please have them contact me. Our attendance for the first weekend of programing was the most impressive we’ve had. Thats tells me a lot about the level of excitement and commitment our athletes and families share.

Thanks to Janelle we had a great social on Saturday and these socials will be important in building our support for freestyle at Sugarloaf and for our young athletes during competitions.

As we move ahead into the training, groups will be adjusted based on size, age, and freestyle experience. It is important that all athletes are happy with their group and coach. A positive environment will allow our athletes to achieve new skills and confidence in their skiing and character.

Schedules/Calendar

Note: Our competition schedules and trampoline club schedules are all posted on our calendar.

Things to Do

Please make sure you have the memberships needed for this season's competitions. It would be wise to sign up this week, as registering late will make it difficult for you and the athlete the morning of the event.

Also please add our Carrabassett Valley Academy Freestyle/Freeski Facebook page to your friend list. You will find news on all things freestyle at CVA/WP.

USSA MEMBERSHIP (For Mogul Athletes) If you are planning to compete in USSA events this season, please register for your membership today. Please see the attached WP Freestyle Calendar to view our plans and schedules for USSA events.

USASA MEMBERSHIP (For Freeski Athletes) If you are planning to compete in USASA events this season, this information is for you.  **New This Year** - In years past each athlete could participate in one event without being a USASA member.  This season there is a one-day rate of $35. If you plan on competing in more than one event you must purchase the full price membership.  Please see the attached WP Freestyle Calendar to view our plans and schedule for USSA events.

Program Events

Junior Bump League(JBL) and Drop Box League (DBL) are program events for athletes 8-12 years old in the WP. These events will allow beginners to test the event waters before committing to memberships or travel expenses.  Our Dates for JBL and DBL are not schedule yet.

Jackets

If you are interested in purchasing a CVA Weekend Program team jacket for the season, purchase them here. Remember we are offering a few options this year for parents. Check out the insulated Flannel for yourself or the older boys in the WP. Also the CVA mogul jacket is a great option for parents too.

Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering for Freestyle events please contact Bruce Miles at the Sugarloaf Ski Club. We NEED Your Help. If you are interested in volunteering for JBL or DBL, our in- house events, or parents socials please contact Nathan Mckenzie. You don’t need to commit to a season long job, just an event or two. Bruce would be happy to put you all in a role that you're happy and safe doing.

I want to express to you all the importance of our partners at the Sugarloaf Ski Club. We could not do it without them. Most of their support comes from alpine. Lets rally up and sign up to be members.

November 12th

HELLO WEEKEND PROGRAM FAMILIES,

I would like to take a few moments to welcome many new families to our program in addition to our returning families.  Our small but mighty freestyle program is a great fit for youth who desire a skiing focus that challenges them weekly. Below you will find a list of our freestyle disciplines offered this season. New is the FreeRide (Big Mtn Competitive) focus.

Focus; Moguls

Two groups will focus 40% of their time in the moguls and on mogul jumps. The remaining 60% of their skiing will be developing skills outside the mogul course with other forms of freestyle skiing and free skiing. These two groups will train for events that support the USSA B level schedule. Tony Dowling will coach the 12-15 year old athletes. Joan Dolan will coach the 9-11 year old athletes. Adjustments to these groups can and will be made if the athletes’ talent and results level require it . (USSA Membership is required for all athletes competing in these two groups.)

Focus; Freeski (Park & Pipe)

Two groups will focus 40% of their time in the park. The remaining 60% of skiing will be divided between half pipe, mogul and free skiing. These two groups will train for events that support the USASA schedule. Jesse Duncan will be the travel coach for these groups. Jesse is our lead coach for CVA athletes competing in USASA events. Having this combination of support from CVA staff will help WP athletes become familiar with CVA athletes. When the two groups are not competing in events, Dan Marion and Michael McNamara will coach these two groups while at Sugarloaf.

Focus; FreeRide (Big Mtn Competitive)

Two groups will focus 30% free skiing, 20% route selection, 20% Crud/moguls, 20% park & pipe and 10% safe skiing skills/planning. These two groups will train for events that support the Ski The East Tour. Luke Salvato and Nathan Mckenzie will coach these two groups.

Focus 8-10 year old Multi Discipline

These two groups will focus on all aspects of freestyle skiing while developing sound stance and balance on all levels of terrain at Sugarloaf. The Multi discipline focus will give athletes a chance to choose which venues in freestyle suit their passion.  Our plan is to have 3 coaches working with athletes in this category. With that said, the number of athletes will impact the number of coaches for these groups. Coaches will be announced after the coaches orientation/hiring clinic on November 23rd .  As athletes start to advance and start competing, they will move to focused groups listed above.

USSA MEMBERSHIP (For Mogul Athletes)

If you are planning to compete in USSA events this season, please register for your membership today. Please see the attached WP Freestyle Calendar to view our plans and schedules for USSA events.

USASA MEMBERSHIP (For Freeski Athletes)

If you are planning to compete in USASA events this season, this information is for you.

Please be aware that the published price for the CVA Weekend Program is a cash discounted price for payment by eChecks (ACH). Credit card payments are at a non-discounted price (2.75% above the discounted price).

This year there is only one price for all participants: $1,475. A preseason price of $1,400 is available for payments made on or before Monday, October 13, 2014. At that time, all payments revert to the regular price of $1,475. Registration for the Trampoline Club

The Trampoline Club is intended to be an exclusive opportunity for athletes to extend their weekend training from the mountain during the day to the Anti-gravity Center. Our coaches will be instructing Weekend Program athletes on various upright and inverted aerial maneuvers with an emphasis on safety and air awareness.  This dry land training method is expected to translate to improved balance and confidence when performing on hill.  The 2014-2015 Trampoline Club meets Saturdays (2:00pm-4:00pm), beginning December 13th and running through March 21st.  The total cost of the sessions, in addition to the CVA Weekend Program, is $420.00. (14 spots available) For more information contact Nathan Mckenzie 207. 441. 4759 nmckenzie@gocva.com.  This is an amazing opportunity for CVA weekend athletes to have additional freestyle training in a world-class trampoline facility.

Look for these changes:

We have added some additional CVA Fridays as opportunities to train with the CVA athletes and coaches and develop more  skills for competition.  There is an additional fee for these days.  The dates are below and trgistration can be found on the www.gocva.com site.

August 22, 2014

Newsflash!

We have expanded our water ramp training dates to include a weekend for our Weekend Program athletes who are 10 and older. This summer a few athletes explored this training opportunity and had great success.

Here are the details:

  • We would depart from CVA on September 12 at 10am and ramp the 13th and 14th.
  • We would need to create a ride share for the return on the 14th because I will be staying in Lake Placid for a CVA team training camp.
  • The cost is estimated to be $320 for lodging, the ride over, meals, and coaching. This is an estimate. Final cost will be determined once we know the number of participants
  • All athletes will need a wet suit, life jacket, mouth guard, 2 pairs of skis, old boots, helmet, sneakers, and a towel.
  • MOST important is your USSA membership renewal.

Please contact me before August 29th if you would like to reserve a spot.

Check out our Facebook page for shots of Colin, Parker, Alex, Johnny, David, and Ben, some of our WP athletes that have stepped up to the ramps.

Also their parents are great supporters of the training and are great a resource for parent concerns and questions.

Thanks,
